Our process

From brief to the last lift

Our process

Grasso Consulting Engineers

Six stages, one engineer. The same director takes the brief, inspects the structure, designs the solution, signs it and stays with it on site.

The six stages

01Brief

We start with a conversation and your documents: architectural drawings, survey, geotechnical report, the existing structure’s drawings if it is coming down, and your programme. We agree what the structure or the demolition has to achieve and what we will deliver.

02Site and structure

Review of the existing documentation and an inspection of the site and the structure. For a demolition this is where the structural system, post-tensioning, transfer structures and any surprises are identified; for a new building it is where the ground, the boundaries and the neighbours are understood.

03Methodology and concept

For demolitions, the methodology: sequence, temporary propping, retained elements, lifts and loads, worked through with the contractor. For new buildings, the structural concept: framing, materials and the spans that make the architecture work.

04Design and documentation

Properly detailed drawings and calculations in reinforced concrete, post-tensioned concrete, steel or timber, plus the design of temporary works, lifting cradles and rigging where the job needs them.

05Certification and approvals

Design compliance declarations as a Registered Design Practitioner – Structural (NSW) for regulated designs, RPEQ certification in Queensland, and review and approval of the structural engineering content of work method statements.

06On site

Meetings with the owner and the contractor through the works, inspections at the hold points that matter, and a phone that is answered when something on site is not what the drawings said.
